One should appreciate life for what it is – not for what it ought to be.
What I mean by this is that we often dream of a better world – a perfect, ideal world. Or perhaps not even an ideal world, but a world that is improved from our current one. However, this is hardly the path one should take if one wants to appreciate life. Dreams, hope, idealism – they all lead to disappointment in one way or another. Life is what it is. Despite the hardships, and cruelty, and suffering – one should appreciate life as it is – right now. Appreciate the life you have and the life around you now, as it is,- despite all the mistakes, displeasure and emptiness prevalent in it. When one can do this, everyday becomes endurable.
